Exhibition
CARAVAN 2/2010: Markus Uhr
The subject of this year’s second installment of our series of exhibitions of young art, Markus Uhr presents photographs, collages and drawings from the last two years.
Markus Uhr carries the compact camera with him at all times. The artist does not search his motifs, he finds them. He photographs his own everyday life and, in his "found images," records objects and situations that he happens upon. These photographs at the same time serve as materials for his collages in which he combines images from print media or old art publications. The images that at first glance seem conflicting are amalgamated into a new structure.
In his collage "Letzte Nacht" (2009) for instance, the young Brigitte Bardot merges with the image of the Baby Jesus from the painting "Darmstadt Madonna" (1526/28) by Hans Holbein the Younger: posing lasciviously, the iconic film star carrying a child on her arm turns into the Mother of God. Markus Uhr frequently arranges his images in pairs, in order to point out similarities, doublings or polarities, as if one mirror were holding up a mirror to the other. In the exhibition at the Aargauer Kunsthaus, the Brigitte Bardot collage enters into a dialogue with a medieval carved Pieta sculpture from the collection of the museum.
