Art Parcours
With the new Art Parcours program at Art 41 BaseI, the show positions contemporary art within the city of Basel in an unprecedented way, temporarily occupying iconic venues throughout the city’s historic center.
For three successive nights, site-specific artworks and performances by 10 artists will transform a variety of unique locations in Basel.
The Art Parcours opening, held on Thursday June 17, will be by invitation only. The two other Art Parcours evenings - Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19, 2010 - will be open to the public for a entrance fee of 15 CHF that allows access to all the venues. Advance booking available at www.artbasel.com/parcours. Starting Wednesday, June 16 tickets can be purchased at box offices at Messeplatz, Halls 1 and 2; on Friday and Saturday, June 18 and 19 tickets can also be purchased at Art Parcours Center at Pfalz on Münsterplatz.

JOHN BOCK / “DER SEEWOLF,” 2010 / Münster Ferry Boat
John Bock will stage a new performance on the historic boats that have been ferrying passengers across the Rhine River since 1854. For his performance, Bock adopts a persona drawn from Jack London's 1904 novel “The Sea-Wolf”. Bock's performance weaves together social, political and artistic commentaries that navigate into the unexpected.

ANGELA BULLOCH / “NIGHT SKY: MERCURY & VENUS,” 2010 / Münster Cathedral
A specially commissioned version of Angela Bulloch's mesmerizing LED-powered lightbox, mimicking a night sky, will shine above the altar at Basel's Münster cathedral. Bulloch's piece reveals a wide “view” into the universe to the upward-gazing spectator.

DANIEL BUREN / “COLORS ON THE RHINE” WORK IN SITU 2010. BASEL CH' /Old University
Daniel Buren's installation is sited at the Alte Universität of Basel, the oldest university in Switzerland, located in the historic heart of Basel. Buren's installation will transform the windows of the university’s facade with a checkered grid of colored transparencies, which after dark will be lit from within, projecting light rays into the night.

NATHALIE DJURBERG AND HANS BERG / “OF COURSE I'M WORKING WITH MAGIC,” 2010 / Natural History Museum, Storage Cellar
Nathalie Djurberg will present a claymation video in the storage cellar of the Natural History Museum of Basel, accompanied by a live soundtrack created by Hans Berg. Amidst the stuffed animals, protruding horns and natural oddities stored in this basement, Djurberg will also screen a selection of her hand-modeled animations featuring animal characters.

AURÉLIEN FROMENT / “THE FOURDRINIER MACHINE INTERLUDE,” 2010 / Mentelin Hof, E.E. Zunft zu Weinleuten
Aurélien Froment will premiere a new documentary film, specially commissioned on occasion of Art Parcours. The film revolves around the invention and production of paper in Basel, and will be narrated in German, English and French dubbed over
each other, creating an unintelligible cacophony of words.

RYAN GANDER / “LOOSE ASSOCIATIONS 1.1,” 2002 / “LOOSE ASSOCIATIONS 2.1,” 2003 / Natural History Museum, Auditorium
Ryan Gander will perform a series of “Loose Association Lectures” in the lecture hall of the Natural History Museum of Basel, which is decorated from floor to ceiling with portraits of famous Swiss scientists and academics. Unlike these scientists, celebrated for their use of logic, Gander seemingly defies reason in his ongoing series of public speeches.

DAMIÁN ORTEGA / “NEW BALANCE,” 2010 / City Hall, Court Yard
Damián Ortega will create an installation in the interior courtyard of the Town Hall, the seat of the city government, dating back to the 14th century. Within this political and judicial nexus, Ortega will install a monumental sculpture of the Goddess of Justice flanked by a three-armed scale, upon which the public can step in an attempt to reach equilibrium.

MARTHA ROSLER / “FAIR TRADE GARAGE SALE,” 2010 / Museum of Cultural History
Martha Rosler recreates her seminal performance and installation work “Fair Trade Garage Sale,” adapted specifically for Art Parcours and presented at the Museum der Kulturen. “Fair Trade Garage Sale” takes its inspiration from the American “garage sale,” where one person's junk is another person's treasure. Everything is for sale,
and prices can be negotiated with the artist, who will be present. All proceeds of the sale will be donated to a local charity.

CERITH WYN EVANS / “PAYSAGE FAUTIF (WAYWARD LANDSCAPE),” 2010 / On the Rhine at the Mittlere Rheinbrücke
Cerith Wyn Evans will create a firework display on a floating platform in the Rhine, adjacent to the oldest bridge in Basel, the Mittlere Rheinbrücke. Wyn Evans' firework pieces are wooden structures that spell out enflamed quotes burning intensely over a brief period of time.

The piece presented in Basel will be new and site-specific. Additionally, as part of the retrospective exhibition “Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Specific Objects without Specific Form” on view at the Fondation Beyeler, the artwork “Untitled” (America), 1994/1995, by Felix Gonzalez-Torres is presented in parallel to Art Parcours. In this dazzling installation, 240 meters of strung light bulbs hang above the oldest bridge in Basel, the Mittlere Rheinbrücke, which dates back to the early 13th century.
The zig zag of lights dangling overhead are an extension beyond the museum space of Felix Gonzalez-Torres's exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler. Reminiscent of a summer garden party, the light strings have something at once romantic and festive but also melancholic about them.

ART UNLIMITED
This year’s Art Unlimited exhibition features 56 projects. The lineup of artists showing at this ambitious exhibition of contemporary art reads like a cross-section of leading figures from the international art scene in recent decades. Alongside this exhibition in the Art Unlimited hall, the Art Statements section presents 26 one-person shows of young artists this year. Hall 1 has been extensively redesigned this year and will also host Artists Books, Artists Records, a bookshop, the new project Off Press and the new auditorium for Art Salon and Art Basel Conversations.
In the 17,000-square-meter exhibition hall, Art Unlimited offers artists and galleries a platform for works that exceed the possibilities of the conventional art-fair booth. It showcases outsize sculptures, video projections, installations, wall paintings, photographic series, and performance art. In addition, a separate limited-edition catalog (costing 40 Swiss francs) accompanies the exhibition and includes descriptive texts about each artwork presented in Hall 1 and on Messeplatz in the Art Public sector.
