Utopia and everyday life: Caught between art and education

ARTISTS
Hanswalter Graf, Kristine and Irene Hohenbüchler, Kristina Leko, Valerian Maly and Klara Schilliger, Nils Norman and Tilo Steireif, and Regine von Felten.

In the summer exhibition, the overall question -– what role artists can play in the educational process inside and outside of institutions -– will be investigated. With art projects specially designed for the exhibition, the museum becomes a laboratory where alternatives to conventional, passive knowledge transfer are experimented with and the traditional student-teacher relationship is redefined and redesigned.

The exhibition is based on the belief that art education must support not only partaking, but participation in culture as well. To this end, the participating artists cooperate with various groups based in the region not only in the run-up to the exhibition, but also during the event. A kindergarten, people in old age homes, blind people and senior pupils are involved in the projects. Several receptacles within the exhibition, such as a discourse room, a "making-of-space" and guided tours in dialogue additionally support the process-oriented and participatory nature of the exhibition project.

The idea and the initial concept were developed at the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva, where the results were displayed in the exhibition Utopie et Quotidienneté till the end of March 2010. The Kunstmuseum Thun took the idea and issues and implemented them with other artists and local groups.
