Yesterday Will Be Better - Taking Memory into the Future:

"Yesterday Will Be Better" is a large group exhibition covering national and international art practices and focusing on interferences between different layers of time and the interface between past and future. The point of departure for the exhibition is a paradox: borrowed for the show’s title from the artist George Brecht, the prediction that “Yesterday will be better” gives a mind-bending twist to the old truism claiming that “everything was better in the past.” The pun invites us to reflect on events and, at least in the future, to furnish history with more meaning, to shape it more actively and with more of a vision. At the same time the assertion calls itself into question. The rendering of reality by means of memories is reflected in the exhibition through various artistic strategies. Different modes of re-narration, re-construction or re-reading play an important role when tracing the arc between past and future. The show Yesterday Will Be Better brings together exhibits that reflect different cultural identities. In varying and complex ways, works by 35 artists of different generations and backgrounds raise the question why and how we remember and what the specific desires are that we develop. The works on view are mostly from the past ten years and include video and installation art, painting, photography and sculpture.

"tempi passati"

"empi passati" looks at the eventful history of the Aargauischer Kunstverein and the Aargauer Kunsthaus, putting such milestones as the launching of the Kunstverein 150 years ago, the subsequent founding of a comprehensive industrial arts museum and the construction of the Kunsthaus 50 years ago as well as its expansion in 2003 into the perspective of the larger context. The exhibition tempi passati evolves in close dialogue with the Aargauer Kunsthaus’s permanent collection. Works from its rich holdings are juxtaposed with photographs, posters, catalogues and magazines as well as documents from the periphery of art and the art world, thus vividly and sensuously illustrating how, with time, the cultural context changes, and with it the demands on a museum and the public or private entities backing it. The Kunstverein and Kunsthaus appear at the charged point of intersection between artistic developments and social transformations. In an exemplary fashion the exhibition’s narrative demonstrates how the idea of a small group of dedicated individuals developed into a cornerstone of the cultural self-image of our society. Beyond the local developments tempi passati, thus, also focuses on developments in the way art is viewed over time. The exhibition is a project with the artist Christoph Gossweiler and the “Freistilmuseum.”
