"Die sind doch auch gut und schön, die Fragen – hoffentlich" (They surely are good and nice, as well, these questions – I hope.) the German-Swiss-born artist Dieter Roth states 1976 in an interview when he realizes that the questions posed to him were not recorded but only his answers. The undercurrent of this statement shows Roth’s awareness of the inescapable misbalance and the exhaustion that the question-answer-spiel inflicts on the one who is being questioned. All the same, for Roth, having to expose himself verbally, having to answer, was existential for his sense of being-in-the-world as an artist and a human being. This event wants to be a laudation to the importance of the question and its intimidating influence in the arts and for the individual in general: Who poses and who remembers questions? Who is allowed to ask questions and who has to respond in our society? What is a question anyhow, a means of inquiry, a critique, or rather an instrument for manipulation – or does it rope memory and moment together in a pose of resistance towards all things fleeting?

Six artistic positions are invited to perform their actions, which were specifically created for the city of Lucerne on January 25th. These artists apply different strategies to play, scrutinize and conquer the authority of the question in many various ways. Some critically reinterpret institutionalized knowledge based on inquiries, others visualize potential associations with the topic in poetic and humoristic ways, while a third group questions the social reality of the artist itself.
